LADIES REPORT: LIVERPOOL 4 CHELSEA 3
A late goal consigned Chelsea Ladies to a
dramatic defeat on Merseyside.
Emma Hayes's side twice took the lead in
the game against the side they defeated at
home back in May, but two goals from
the Merseysiders inside the last quarter of
an hour prevented a repeat of that result.
Chelsea were two goals ahead inside
seven minutes. A mix up between
Liverpool left-back Corina Schroder and
their goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill allowed
Sweden international striker Sofia
Jakobsson to capitalise.
The home side were still recovering from
that setback when the advantage was
doubled. A swift counter-attack set Eniola
Aluko clear and the England striker
clinically found the bottom corner.
Liverpool should have cut the deficit on
17 minutes when Louise Fors blasted
over but they did not have to wait long to
get on the scoresheet when a Fara
Williams' free-kick eluded Carly Telford
and bounced in. It was nearly 2-2 when
Da Costa side-footed wide. At the other
end, Chelsea were being frustrated by the
home team's offside trap.
The second half started slowly but
following unanswered Liverpool appeals
for a penalty, the home side were able to
celebrate when a corner was headed
towards goal and Nicole Rolser forced it
in.
Parity was short lived. After Natasha
Dowie had been superbly foiled by Carly
Telford, Chelsea broke and Jakobsson's
cross was headed into her own net by
Becky Easton.
With a dozen minutes remaining it
seemed like Liverpool's third league
defeat of the season was inevitable.
Instead, the Merseysiders rallied and a
driven cross from Rolser led to Dowie
heading in.
There were 84 minutes on the clock when
the same pair combined again. This time
it was Dowie providing; pouncing on a
loose ball and squaring it to Rolser who
finished on the line.
