ASUP threatens to resume strike as government fails to honour agreements

The union says governmnet is not takingthem seriously.The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics,ASUP, has threatened to resume itssuspended national strike, following thefailure of the government to resolvecontending issues with the union within astipulated time frame.The union suspended its two monthsstrike last month following theintervention of federal lawmakers andpromises by the government to meet thelecturers demands.The threat of the looming strike wasdisclosed in a statement by ASUP sNational Publicity Secretary, ClementChirman, on Tuesday. Mr. Chirman saidthat the federal government was playinggames with the lecturers demands. None (of the demands) has been fullyaddressed, he said.Some of the issues yet to be addressedare the re-negotiation of a FederalGovernment/ASUP agreement; theremoval of the dichotomy between HND/University graduates in placement andcareer progression; constitution of aneffective and functional governing councilfor polytechnics; a white paper onvisitation
