Image

Both Kaigama and Uyot, who spoke in different telephone interviews with our correspondent, said that the issue at stake was too serious for the government to endanger with a minor issue as the withholding of the salaries of the striking lecturers. Kaigama said that the lecturers should have been paid their salaries as going on strike did not mean that they were no longer entitled to their salaries. He explained that the union went on strike because the Federal Government failed to implement the 2009 agreement reached with the university lecturers. He added that it was not the lecturers’ fault for embarking on the strike, saying the story would have been diffe...

Woman Sells Husband’s Range Rover for N10,000

Image
A man in Nairobi saw an ad in the paper for an “almost new” Range Rover Sport, in excellent condition – price Ksh.5000 (N10,000). He was certain the printers had made a typographical error, but even at Ksh.50,000 it would have been a bargain, so he hurried to the address to look at the car. A nice-looking woman appeared at the front door. Yes, she had placed the ad. The price was indeed Ksh.5000. “The car,” she said, “is in the garage. Come and look at it.” The fellow was overwhelmed. It was a beautiful Range Rover Sport and, as the ad promised, “nearly new.” He asked if he could drive the car around the block. The woman said, “Of course,” and went with him. The Range Rover drove like a dream. The young man peeled off Ksh.5000 and handed it over, somewhat sheepishly. The woman gave him the necessary papers, and the car was his. Finally, the new owner couldn’t stand it any longer. He had to ...

ASUU STRIKE: Schools May Resume On Monday After Emergency NEC Meeting This Weekend

Image
Latest developments indicate that the five-month old ASUU strike, may be called off over the weekend. A source who pleaded anonymity, told newsmen that the National Executive Council, NEC meeting, which was suspended indefinitely because of the death of Late Professor Festus Iyayi, a former president of the Union, maybe be reconvened on Saturday. He said that Iyayi’s death brought shock to the Union, especially as he was on his way to official assignment and the ASUU had to put the meeting on hold to honour him. “There is strong indication that the NEC meeting will be reconvened on Saturday,” he said. When asked if the strike will actually be suspended, he said: “I think so, judging by reports from the Monday congresses we held simultaneously, the union may suspend the strike on Saturday or Sunday.”

ASUU/NEC Meeting Postponed Till SATURDAY

Image
Already, chairmen of local chapters of ASUU are converging on Kano, preparatory to the meeting, from where a positive resolution is being expected. Chairman of one of the federal universities in the South-South, who did not want his name mentioned, said the strike “may be suspended on Saturday.” “Many of the chapters are disposed to ending this strike, which has cost us all a full semester. “As I speak with you, we (chairmen) are on our way to Kano for NEC meeting tomorrow (today).” Asked if the strike would be suspended, he said: “I think so, judging by reports from the Monday congresses we held simultaneously. We may suspend the strike on Saturday or Sunday.” He, however, admonished government to ensure that it honoured its promise so as not to return the university system to this “sorry past”. This, of course, formed the basis for the Monday congresses and today’s “decider” NEC meeting. Th...

Apple, Samsung in fresh legal battle

Image
San Francisco: Apple and Samsung return to a California court on Tuesday for another round in the blockbuster patent trial between the two biggest smartphone makers, Agence France Presse reported. A jury trial will reconsider damages awarded last year in the case stemming from Apple’s allegation that its South Korean rival illegally copied technology from the iPhone and iPad. The new trial became necessary after a judge cut some $450m from a damage award of more than $1bn to be paid by Samsung. Judge Lucy Koh, in her ruling in March, affirmed the remainder of the award, amounting to $598.9m. But a new trial must be held to reconsider some of the allegations. Apple accused its rival of massive and willful copying of its designs and technology for smartphones and tablets and won the landmark case in a jury decision in August 2012. But the case has been on hold pending multiple appeals. The California case is among several pending in courts and administrativ...

'I Am Still A Vírgin' - Chidinma Cries Out

Budding songstress, Chidinma Ekile has denied being the one in the séx tapé that has gone viral on the Internet. The séx tapé that has been trending on the social media feature a lady who had a striking resemblance to the popular Miss Kedike. 12 Reasons Women Don't Date 'Nice Guys'

Image
If you are a guy reading this, you have probably noticed that, instead of opting for a nice and calm partner who would treat her right (you), the girl usually chooses a 'bad boy'. If you are a girl, then you probably are wondering why you are attracted to and end up with a man who treats you badly. We've tried to come up with sensible reasons why this happens, but you are very welcome to add some new insights on the matter in the comments! 1. Not real. Nice guys are too nice. No one can always be that nice unless they're a saint. They are busy being nice instead of being real and women instinctually don't trust that. Bad boys "keep it real." Nice guys don't want to upset the apple cart. 2. Respect. No one respects a doormat. Nice guys don't set boundaries or make any real demands. A bad boy doesn't let a woman walk all over him or control him. Women can't respect a man they can control. No respect equals no attractio...

Ending The ASUU Strike

Image
You could say it again: the negotiations over the last Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike, were perhaps, the most arduous in the history of strikes in Nigeria. Initially, the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, did not want to be involved directly. He only wanted to do so through proxies. It started with Governor Gabriel Suswam- led universities Needs Assessment Implementation Committee and later Namadi Sambo-led mediation committee, none of which succeeded in brokering agreements that could bring an end to the strike. Much later, the Senate led by its President, David Mark, dismissed the 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and the striking union as unrealistic, while the House of Representatives offered to approve a budgetary intervention to enable ASUU end the strike. The Speaker, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who was briefed by the Aminu Suleiman- led House Committee on Education asked to investigate and recommend solution appealed to the...

Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon Mourns former ASUU President

Image
"The grand initiation of Professor Festus Iyayi is a lancinating loss of another stentorian voice, against retrograde and prebendal forces of primitive mercantilism. That he passed through transition on matters pro bono publico, bears eloquent testimony to our state of dystopia. Such is the evanescence of life. Its all vanitas vanitatum"

ASUU STRIKE LATEST: Indeed, ASUU set to suspend strike this week – Union leaders

Image
Indications have emerged that the Academic Staff Union of Universities may call off the over four-month-old strike on Thursday. Barring a last-minute change, the National Executive Committee of ASUU will meet on Wednesday night to consider the position of the congresses of the over 50 public universities on the offer made by the Federal government to revamp the institutions. The union met with a Federal Government team led by President Goodluck Jonathan last Tuesday in Abuja. The ASUU leadership, after briefing the zonal coordinators on the offer, had directed the local branches to organise congress meetings between Friday last week and Tuesday (tomorrow). This is to enable all the lecturers to make input into the action the union would take after its NEC meeting on Thursday. However, feelers from most universities that had organised their congresses revealed that ASUU would suspend the strike after the Thursday NEC meeting. In some universities, including ...

DISGRACE: NFF Top Shots Exchange Blows in Public

Image
Despite the triumph of the Golden Eaglets Friday in Abu Dhabi it was a show of shame and national disgrace as NFF General secretary Barrister Musa and the Federations First Vice President Chief Mike Umeh exchanged blows in public, right inside the stadium. Eye witness account has it that problem started brewing early evening when Chief Umeh wondered why members of the League Management Committee were allocated “ better cars” than NFF chieftains. He then and there told a colleague that Musa was incompetent and not fit to handle NFF matters. On getting to the stadium, Chief Umeh was given a Category 1 ticket and again he complained insisting that every country was given 20 VIP tickets and wondered why he could not have one as NFF Vice President. At the stadium Chief Umeh boiled over when he saw members of the LMC in the VIP Box and challenged the GS who said he knew nothing about it “Oga two of us are seating here, I don’t know anything ab...

David Did Not Kill Goliath, The Bible Is Not Infallible! – by Femi Aribisala

One of the myths of Christianity is the infallibility of the bible. Quoting Paul, some Christians insist every word in the bible is “God-breathed.” (2 Timothy 3:16). When you identify contradictions in the bible, they either refuse to acknowledge them or try to rationalise them away with highfalutin apologetics. However, these apologetics have not made the contradictions disappear. All they do is establish that these bible- fanatics are not committed to the truth. Christians generally believe little David killed mighty Goliath, according to the “infallible” account of 1 Samuel 17:50-51. This feat is drummed into us from childhood. However, the same “infallible” bible also credits the killing of Goliath to Elhanan, one of David’s mighty men. 2 Samuel says: There was another battle with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan son of Jair from Bethlehem killed Goliath from Gath.” (2 Samuel 21:19 This record of Elhanan (a...
